December blog

It feels as though the semester flew by and unfortunately now it’s come to an end. Although it will be nice to recuperate and spend time with family, I will miss my classmates until next semester. I really enjoyed the last module we covered as a class that was GI and cancer. Although it was a challenging topic due to how many different types of treatments there are for cancer, it was rewarding in the end. I found all the topics we covered this semester engrossing and applicable to daily life. I now find myself constantly googling Brand names of drugs to see the generic name and saying to myself “Oh I know this drugs mechanism of action.” Even when I see commercials about drugs on the market I understand the toxicities and drug interactions mentioned much more than I did before this semester. I am looking forward to the next topics that will be covered in class, psych medications in particular.

After Thanks Giving there was not much time left for social activities, however, my classmate Emily threw a Hanukkah party and several other classmates attended. I also went out to dinner several times and got to enjoy the delicious food New Orleans has to offer.

As per volunteering, this month I went back to the covenant house with Emily. This time we were able to work in the Two Generation Program. This program was developed to help low-income children and their parents. Covenant house helps young adults along with their small children. The residents in the two generation program have a permanent based living and their own section. In this section there are apartments, a shared kitchen and a space for the children to play. Emily and I sorted through the small storage room that was filled with many donations. Some of the things stored were diapers, baby food/formula, toys, and other necessities for small children. There was much work to be done and we spent several hours organizing the closet space. Then we headed to another part of the covenant house where we sorted through more donations. Every year the covenant house receives lots of donations before the holidays, one of them being coats for the winter. We sorted through the coats and organized them based on size.I was shocked and heartfelt when I saw the amount of donations they received, all the items were also brand new and packaged. It is always a pleasurable experience to volunteer at the Covenant House. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. The experience is always rewarding.
